Forty years of probate experience—beginning with an estate of his own.

Leon McKenzie brings forty years of probate experience to his work as an author helping families navigate estate settlement. His introduction to probate began in 1986, when he served as the personal representative of an estate. He later served as personal representative for several estates, giving him firsthand knowledge of the responsibility, uncertainty, family pressure, paperwork, property decisions, and emotions that follow a death.

Those experiences shaped the direction of Leon’s professional life. He saw that most families enter probate with little preparation and no clear idea of what will happen next. Attorneys and courts address legal requirements, but families still need someone to explain the larger experience in ordinary language and help them prepare for the decisions ahead.

Leon later co-founded a nationwide probate-information company. For nearly twenty-five years, he helped lead the collection, organization, and delivery of probate information to professionals across the country. Over that 25-year period, the company retrieved 4 million probate records. Together, Mike and Leon also had more than 5,000 customer and executor contacts, giving them a close view of the questions that arise again and again for families.

He also brings more than fifty years of experience building and operating businesses. After founding more than twenty-five companies, Leon approaches difficult situations with an entrepreneur’s practical, problem-solving perspective. His strength is helping people see the larger picture, understand the roles involved, and communicate more confidently with qualified professionals.

Today, Leon writes with his son, Mike, about the human side of probate—the responsibility, waiting, memories, relationships, disagreements, and moments of understanding that legal instructions alone may leave unexplained. His goal is to sit beside readers, speak plainly, and help them move through probate with greater confidence, patience, and perspective.

Twenty-five years turning probate information into practical understanding.

Mike McKenzie brings twenty-five years of probate experience to his work as an author, entrepreneur, educator, and solution provider. He co-founded the same nationwide probate-information company and, for nearly twenty-five years, helped lead the work of collecting, organizing, and delivering probate information to professionals who serve estates across the country.

Managing information on that scale gave Mike an unusual view of how probate unfolds in real life. Each court record represented more than names, dates, and documents. Behind it was a family adjusting to a death, an executor accepting unfamiliar responsibilities, beneficiaries waiting for answers, and professionals trying to help an estate move forward properly.

Mike worked with executors, families, and professionals to resolve data-related questions and problems. Across 4 million probate records retrieved over a 25-year period and more than 5,000 customer and executor contacts shared by Mike and Leon, he saw recurring patterns across estates of different sizes, locations, family structures, and levels of complexity. People wanted to know what happens next, why the process takes time, who has authority to act, and how to make responsible decisions without creating unnecessary conflict.

That experience shapes Mike’s practical, down-to-earth communication style. He believes people understand difficult subjects more easily when information feels like a conversation instead of a lecture. This solution-provider’s perspective helps give the Probate Happens™ series its clear, approachable, fireside voice.

Today, Mike writes with his father, Leon, to help families see probate as both a process and a human experience. His goal is to help readers feel less intimidated, ask better questions, work more confidently with attorneys and other professionals, and move forward with patience, understanding, and respect for everyone involved.

A shared purpose

Professional enough to trust. Human enough to understand.

The Probate Happens™ books, Quick Answers™, Action Guides™, workbooks, and learning experiences are designed to make an unfamiliar process easier to understand without burying readers in legal language.

An important boundary: Leon and Mike are not attorneys. Their writing and educational resources do not provide legal advice or replace advice from a qualified attorney, tax professional, financial professional, or other appropriate expert.

Probate rules and procedures can vary by state and by estate. Probate Happens™ helps readers understand the broader picture, prepare better questions, and recognize when professional guidance matters.
